Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the man whom Christians believe was sent to save humanity from itself. At the root of everything, humanity's original sin was one of arrogant pride. Although we have truly been blessed with so much, we too often selfishly search for more.

Christmas is the season when we remember the simplicity and humility with which God gave us a gift that could truly save us from ourselves. Christmas is a celebration of selfless giving, of lasting peace, of true joy, most importantly tangible hope.

So, when someone tells you "Merry Christmas!" they are simply wishing you peace, joy, and hope. Those who have turned Christmas into a primarily commercial enterprise are simply misguided. Those who are somehow offended by being wished a Merry Christmas need to realize that the true meaning and spirit of Christmas cannot by definition be offensive. Who would truly oppose peace on earth, and good will toward men? Who would oppose spreading cheer, hope, and joy?
